All about roadside drainage system

ROADSIDE DRAINAGE SYSTEM:

Roadside drainage system, on any highway or street, should be well provided for the flow of water away from the surface of the highway from the properly designed channels. Improper drainage will ultimately result in serious damage to the highway structure. Also, The traffic may be low due to stored water on the surface and that can also cause accidents. The highway engineer is involved firstly with two sources of water which are surface water which comes with rain or snow upon the surface. And later on, some of this water will be observed in the ground and the remaining should be removed so that can be called surface drainage.

Types of roadside drainage or highway drainage:

  1. surface drainage.
  2. Subsurface drainage.
  3. Slope
  4. Downspout/gutters.

Requirements of good highway drainage system:

Surface water from adjoining land should be prevented from entering the roadway. The flow of surface water across the road and shoulders and along slopes should not cause the formation of cross ruts or erosion.

Methods used for drainage of the road:

Normal methods of sub-surface drainage on motorways and block roads, usually installed longitudinally near the lower side of road paving. Keep water out of the road structure. Also, check the entry of water from border states.

The trapezoidal shape is the most preferred shape of the drainage because of its simplicity and ease.

The necessity of roadside drainage system:

Road drainage can be used to clear the drainage from the highway. Roads need to be well-drained to prevent flooding, even exterior water can create difficulties with ice in the winter. Water left standing on roads can also cause maintenance problems, as it can weaken the ground under a road making the road surface break up.

Work of road drainage:

Its purpose is to empty the water out of the expressway into the sewerage framework. A parkway channel is a line interfacing the thruway ravine to the surface water sewer. Its motivation is to permit water from structures to penetrate into the encompassing earth. These are now and then used to deplete the thruway.

Importance of highway drainage:

Traffic security (hydroplaning and ice), helpless seepage is a wellbeing issue. Water may collect out and about as it does in lakes. Any gathered water makes a danger of hydroplaning when the streets have downpour on them. A wet street surface lessens grating which prompts longer distances expected to slow down vehicles.

  • side ditches
  • culverts
  • Inner/ outer slopes
  • Road structures
  • Underdrains

The general score of the road drainage system is dependent on its weakest link. This means that if any of its elements are out of order, the whole system will not operate as planned and the road will be damaged. On the other hand, a well-built and maintained road drainage system is a very sustainable investment policy. The main benefits of a good drainage method are:
